Space Summit '07

The Calgary Space Frontier Society

A Chapter of the National Space Society located in Canada is one of the key supporters of the upcoming

Canadian Space Summit

This November 17 and 18 the Calgary Space Frontier Society (CSFS) will co-host for the first time the annual Canadian Space Summit, a gathering of members, students, the public, and the directors of three space organizations in Canada. The purpose of the Summit is to bring together the diverse interests of the space science sector in industry and academia along with the grass roots interest groups, the Canadian Space Society, the Canadian division of the Mars Society, and the student led SEDS.

Held at the University of Calgary in the Science B building, the speakers come from a variety of disciplines, all related to research in, and work with astrophysics, planetary geology, astronomy, upper atmosphere physics, analog space missions, the new X-prizes, and propulsion systems. The schedule has been set and runs from 9:00 am Saturday morning to 5:00 pm, followed by the AGM of the three supporting organizations, and the evening banquet at 7:30 pm.

The following morning, a variety of additional presenters will speak in parallel tracks until noon, and after lunch a panel discussion on future directions our country should be taking in relation to the Moon Mars Initiative of the United States. The directors of the three groups will hammer out the steps needed in a separate meeting to help guide our organizations in the year to come.

This is the first time the CSFS has supported or organized a conference in several years, and we are looking forward to establishing firm contacts with the individuals and groups in attendance with the ultimate goal of choosing two or three projects on which to focus our energies in the future. The conference Chairman, John Thayer, is a U of C graduate student working in the field of bone loss and rejuvenation at the university.

Although the National Space Society appears a minor supporter of this conference, we encourage any and all members who are within reasonable transportation distance of the city to come and enjoy the weekend and find out what types of research our speakers are pursuing. The subject material ranges from highly technical to societal and is meant to appeal to a wide educated cross section of the populace.
