NSS Banner Contest Winners

The National Space Society and NSS Chapters jointly sponsored a contest to Redesign its then current NSS Banner. It was a search for artwork that would create visions of space exploration and settlement. Designs that would bring attention to the goal of creating a space-faring civilization. The winning designs would be used for the next printing of Banners/Signs to be displayed during NSS Chapter and National projects and events at home and around the world....

The four winning designs are:

First Place: Journey, by Badrul Rupak, USA

Entry Description: The setting of this banner is outside a distant planet resemblant of our own. It is merely a pit stop for our human space ship, which soon after touching base on this distant planet is launched back up and off to the next celestial body. It is a testament to our never-ending quest to explore beyond our perceived limits.

2nd Place: Aristarchus City, by Bill Wright, USA

Entry Description: Aristarchus City was established in 2054 by an international consortium of private entrepreneurs. It's population quickly grew to over 5,000 by 2060 with immigrants from countries all over the Earth. In 2065 Aristarchus City declared it's independance from the Earth and established the first constitution on the Moon.

2nd Place: The Time of The Dreams, by Javier Arizabalo, Spain

Entry Description: The best way to motivate to do something is with beauty. Since a current arises from empathy, the idea is to create beauty. The motivation to undertake an action arises from the dreams that one has. The discoveries only arise from a persistence that makes one bear the effort that these suppose.

3rd Place: The Moon, Mars and Beyond, by Bill Wright, USA

Entry Description: Operations at the Apollo Lunar Base. Cave exploration is underway on Mars. Manned mission to the outer planets.

Congratulations to all of the winners.

I would also like to thank all of the Artists/Designers who entered our contest. The designs were all unique and told a story from the viewpoint of their creators.

I did have the opportunity to speak with more than a few of the artists either by email or by telephone (which is unique in itself). Each encounter was an opening to a new relationship which I hope to continue into the future. Their talent speaks for itself. Their characters while speaking with me of their work were pure joy and creativity.

The winning banners were displayed in the main NSS area at the NSS International Space Development Conference 2007 which was held in Dallas, Texas.

At the awards dinner, after being treated to a talk by Harrison Schmidt (Apollo 17 Mission Scientist and former U.S. Senator),
Bill Wright, accompanied by his wife, was on hand to receive an award as winner in not one but two levels in the contest. The awards were presented by yours truly.

The honor was all mine.

As a side note Bill was also one of the winners in the Space Settlement Calendar Contest.

You can see all of the designs along with the names of the Artists/Designers and their contact information (if given) at http://www.nss.org/awards/banner.html or by clicking here.
