Operation Red Coat

Tracking Santa

Our chapters are everywhere. Each has their own unique way of introducing the young, the old and the somewhere in-between to the wonders of space travel. Some start in low earth orbit while others begin by using traditions and local events. High tech equipment for tracking these events comes to the land dweller.

Read the message below from the President of National Space Society of Phoenix to see what they are doing right now.

_____The National Space Society of Phoenix will be involved in a mission classified as "Operation Red Coat" starting December 24, 2006. The purpose of this mission is to ensure that the general public is made aware of the time available until Santa pays them a visit, especially within the Phoenix region. It is highly advised that everyone get your telescopes prepared as well as any digital equipment in order to obtain visual data of Santa! Be aware that it is encouraged that all children (young and old alike) turn in for the night BEFORE Santa comes to their residence. That being said, ensure that your equipment is set on "automatic" to capture Santa's arrival!

The National Space Society of Phoenix acquires their up-to-the-minute information on the location of Santa with the help of Norad. Please brief yourself with the data available at the following URL: http://www.noradsanta.org/index.php
No matter where you are you can track Santa by visiting Norad's site at: http://www.noradsanta.org/en/tracking.php

You can send Norad an e-mail at: tracking@noradsanta.org

Or, for those who have not written to Santa, you can send him a quick e-mail at: NorthPole@OfficialSantaMail.com
For those of you within the Phoenix region, please visit the National Space Society of Phoenix website at: http://nssphoenix.wordpress.com

Any National Space Society Chapter (National or International) or members of the general public residing within the Phoenix region willing to volunteer their time and efforts to this mission, please contact the NSS Phoenix Chapter President, Veronica Ann Zabala-Aliberto at Veronica.Zabala@nss.org

Happy Holidays!
Veronica Ann

Allies In Space

A community of Space and Astronomy groups and individuals working together to promote Space Exploration/Settlement.

This year both the New York City (NSS-NYC)and the New Jersey (NSS-NJN)chapters worked together along with other groups to promote the 2nd Annual event of Allies In Space, "America's Future in Space." The Long Island Space Society (LISS), although not listed as a Co-sponsor this year, brought along a following to help make things run smoothly for the day.

The event was held at the CUNY Graduate Center's Elebash Recital Hall in New York City. Among the speakers was our own George T. Whitesides, Executive Director of the National Space Society. He gave an overview of what we can look forward to in Space related events to an audience of 140 plus using one of the finest slide presentation I've seen. Other speakers were the noted director of the Hayden Planetarium in NYC, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Aerospace expert and writer Tom Hill. As a last minute added bonus Larry Price, Orion CEV Deputy Program Manager, of Lockheed Martin gave us a preview of the vehicle which will take us back to the Moon and beyond.

We were honored with the presence of Ambassador Edward R. Finch, Jr., current member of the NSS Board of Governors and DR Amanda L. Moore, NSS UN Representative. Ambassador Finch stood up to applaud George Whitesides at the completion of his talk.

Harold Egeln, journalists and President of the New York Space Society, has written a detailed and entertaining account of "America's Future in Space." There are over 70 pictures taken by Ben Lee and others posted on the Allies in Space site for your viewing. Feel free to copy one or more or the pictures for your own personal use. Both of these links can be accessed from the official website for Allies in Space at http://www.alliesinspace.org under Commentaries and Pictures.

We plan to do it again next year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Space Age when on October 4, 1957, Sputnik 1, became the first man made satellite to orbit the earth. So if you or your chapter would like to join us drop an email to me at AlliesInSpace@aol.com

To The Stars,

Candace
