Zathura - week of 11/7
Following on our work with "Magnificent Desolation", NSS Public Affairs VP Jeremy Pyle has arranged for chapters to be able to work with local theatres for the very near release of "Zathura". Larry Evans of Orange County Space Society has a compelling review of the movie in Ad Astra Online, and more on the film below. What's happening now:
1. Sony is sending promotional materials relating to the movie to the (US) chapters - expect it this week or next.
2. We have a chapters committee telecon scheduled for next Sunday, November 6th, at 9:00 PM US Eastern time. This will be one item on the agenda and all are welcome to call in - details to follow.
3. I know this is short notice, but take some time to think about "Zathura-related" events for the opening week (next week). We're just looking for something simple in a few key places - Chicago, NY, LA, DC, but wherever you are, let us know if you have something you can do on short notice. One thing available is special pre-screenings (at no cost to NSS) even before opening night: can we arrange educational events, invite local schoolchildren, arrange for a speaker (local astronaut perhaps?) to talk about the space concepts in the film etc.
4. Contact Jeremy if you have any questions - jeremy AT nss.org - we'd like local media to come out and talk to the local chapter about the film, their interest in space, etc - see what you can do!
*ZATHURA *
A Science Fiction Adventure
Opens in theatres nationwide November 11, 2005
In Columbia Pictures' heart-racing sci-fi adventure Zathura, two squabbling brothers are propelled into deepest, darkest space while playing a mysterious game they discover in the basement of their old house. On their fantastic journey, they are joined by a stranded astronaut and must survive meteor showers, hostile lizard-like aliens, a rocket-propelled robot run amok and an intergalactic spaceship battle.
But their greatest peril lies ahead. For unless they finish the game and reach the planet Zathura, they are doomed to be trapped in outer space forever.
Zathura is based on the best-selling book by the acclaimed children's writer Chris Van Allsburg (The Polar Express, Jumanji) with a screenplay by David Koepp & John Kamps. The film stars Josh Hutcherson, Jonah Bobo, Dax Shepard, Kristin Stewart and OscarĀ® winner Tim Robbins. The film is directed by Jon Favreau (Elf) and produced by William Teitler, Scott Kroopf and Michael De Luca.
