NSS Testifies before US Senate on NASA's Future

RETURN TO LUNA Short Story Contest

We will be accepting submissions for stories that deal with humanity's return to, and colonization of the Moon. Winning stories will be selected later this year by a panel of award-winning authors and editors, and will be included in the print anthology RETURN TO LUNA, along with other prizes. NSS Joins SEA on Capitol Hill

NSS members from all over the United States joined the Space Exploration Alliance (SEA) this February on Capitol Hill in an effort to ensure that the $1 billion shortfall in the proposed FY09 NASA budget is addressed by Congress. The event marked the start of the Space Exploration Alliance's 2008 Budget Campaign, a year-long push to educate Congress on space policy matters. Click here for the full press release.

Space Shuttle Atlantis has Launched!

Beating the bad-weather odds, the space shuttle Atlantis lifted off the pad at 2:45 p.m. sending windows rattling for miles around. After being forced to wait due to an ECO (engine cutoff) sensor problem, Atlantis made up the time by blazing a fiery trail to orbit. The seven-member crew of STS-122 consisted of Commander Stephen Frick, Pilot Alan Poindexter and mission specialists Leland Melvin, Stan Love, Rex Walheim, Hans Schlegel and Leopold Eyharts. The mission is scheduled to last for 11 days and deliver the European-built Columbus module to the International Space Station. Congratulations to Atlantis and its crew! | NSS Leads Formation of New Space Solar Power Alliance |

The Space Solar Alliance for Future Energy (SSAFE), a new organization advocating investment in space-based solar power technologies to address the planet's future energy needs, was announced Wednesday, October 10 at the National Press Club. The coalition of 13 leading research organizations and space advocacy groups focused their inaugural event on the announcement of a new study of space-based solar power led by the National Security Space Office (NSSO). On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Dawn of the Space Age, space travelers with a combined 415 days of space experience gathered in Croatia this past weekend to discuss the future of human spaceflight. The conference, "Human Presence in Space," was chaired by NSS Executive Director George Whitesides. The aim of the event was to inspire the next generation of scientists in Europe and Croatia, and to chart the future role of smaller countries in human spaceflight. Read more. |

| NSS/NASA Ames Student Space Settlement Design Contest -- deadline March 31, 2008 |

NSS and NASA wants you to design your best space settlement -- a place in space for you, your friends, and family to live, play and work. Space settlement is excellent thematic and many teachers have used the contest we great success (see www.nss.org/settlement/nasa/teacher/ for lesson plans). In accordance with a new Space Act Agreement, NSS and NASA will jointly sponsor the long-running annual NASA Ames Student Space Settlement Design Contest. Sixth to twelfth grade students should create their space settlement design, or short story, or artwork, and send it to NASA Ames Research Center by March 31st. The grand prize winner will have their work hosted on a NASA web server and NASA will nominate a contestant to receive the NSS Annual Student Space Settlement of the Year Award at the ISDC conference in Dallas this spring.
