Notes from 21 Nov 2002 LI Space Society working meeting Present: Arthur Smith, Richard Ohlrogge, Edna Edelstein (by phone), David Ellis Setting goals for 2003, steps to accomplish them. Goals: 1. Build a bigger pool of people enthusiastic about this work 2. Find a home: Nassau, Suffolk, or both 3. Schedule of speakers and events 4. Establish budget and finances on a sound footing Steps to accomplish these goals: 1. Communications: * letters to institutions to find best ways to provide information - colleges and universities, schools (for teachers), libraries, museums, companies (Grumman?) - university newsletter, engineering/science department - can we get ads in newsletters, put flyers in cafeteria? - for schools, county board of science supervisors may be place to start * poster and/or flyer, recruitment message, pointing to web site * build lists of contacts * build lists of announcement locations * Develop the web site (add place to log people's interests) * Use email to the lists NSS provided * Work out a mailing list for people with no email 2. Location: western Suffolk perhaps best? - in Nassau (Cradle of Aviation?) and one in Suffolk (Commack?) - we should check with Josh Stoff and Ben Parris on using CAM again for meetings. Some museum projects also? 3. Ideas so far (we need to contact and confirm): * speaker from presidential commission: study on future of aerospace * presentation from regional Challenger center director * somebody to speak on space station? * watch shuttle launch over internet? * July 20 at CAM * Melanie Krieger (Science and Engineering fairs) * A video once in a while? * Breakfast meeting some time like LIMSAT meeting? * Dave Brody ("Inside Space") and recommendations? * Erik Langeland (Sea Launch) * Marty Hoffert (NYU - space solar power) 4. Budget: * Dues * Donations * Fundraisers Dave gave some ideas on the poster/flyer: we'll work on a poster layout first.
