Ideas for local action:
- Organize and invite speakers, and advertise in community (recruitment)
(NSS-NYC can help)
- Meet with politicians about legislation:
- Felix Grucci, Jr. (R) -
represented NY 1st District, on House Science Committee
We met with him Tuesday, August 13th: summary of the meeting is here
- We should schedule to meet Tim Bishop (new 1st district rep.)
- Steve J. Israel (D) -
represents NY 2nd District, also on House Science Committee
We have 2 of the 4 NY congressmen on the House Science Committe
from our area (the chair is Sherwood Boehlert, from upstate NY);
we definitely can have an impact politically if our
voice for space exploration and settlement is heard.
- Local development: a local directory of companies, research groups,
etc. involved in space-related work? (Cradle of Av. museum has some
of this)
- Other local development: perhaps a proposal for part of the Riverhead
Grumman site? A New York space authority/space port, modeled after the
ones in Florida, CA, Texas, Oklahoma, etc.? (Such a spaceport
is currently being
proposed for southern New Jersey, but limited
to HTHL craft...)
- Opportunities for space industry development on LI - perhaps
through LISTnet or
LIFT?
- A Challenger center?
- Bringing part of a new "Manhattan project for energy independence"
to Long Island (Brookhaven lab?)
Note the NSS chapters handbook has a lot of good project ideas which
we should consider (including some of the above).
