Technical Notes
Viewing
To view these films, your web browser will need a plug-in containing the H.264 codec. This codec is now widely available and is well supported by Apple Inc. If your browser does not already have this codec, please install the Quicktime 7 plug-in.
Each show has a total run time (TRT) of about 28 minutes. This includes the opening and closing credit roll. As captured from MiniDV tape, it occupies about 6 GB (720x480, 29.97 fps). To ease your download experience, each show has been compressed to about 170 MB:
- Container (QuickTime file format, .mov),
- Audio encoder (AAC, Stereo (LR), 48 kHz),
- Video encoder (H.264, 480x360 square pixels, 29.97 fps, 24 bit color).
For streaming video, broadband internet access is recommended.
Downloading
If you wish to download one or more of the above mentioned shows, you may confirm the integrity of the downloaded files by using md5sum. This works by computing the 128-bit MD5 hash (or checksum) of the downloaded file, and then comparing that against the checksum listed in around_space.md5sum. Unix/Linux users can do this by first saving the .md5sum file in the same directory as the downloaded .mov files, and then executing the following command after the command line prompt:
- md5sum -c around_space.md5sum
Mirroring
If you would like to mirror this web page (and have 10 GB disk space available), try using wget. Unix/Linux users can execute:
- wget -kKE -m http://chapters.nss.org/dc/
Around Space is produced by the DC-L5 Chapter of the National Space Society.
