1990s. The Eve of a New Century

On the eve of a new century, two most significant milestones in HAL5's history came about: the 1993 International Space Development Conference (R) (ISDC) and the creation of HAL5 Project High-Altitude Lift-Off (HALO). Both activities inspired the next revolution of private and commercial space, from HALO Rockoon launch to X-Prize Cup to hybrid rocket propulsion on Virgin Galatic's SpaceShipOne. While our own pursuit of launching a rocket into space never materialized, some of our ideas did on SpaceShipOne.

2000s. Where is the Monolith?

While survived the Y2K bug and chasing the space dream, we looked back and wonder, why aren't we back on the Moon, or have an orbital space hotel serviced a la the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. ....

Episode VI

2010s

With NASA Constellation Program moving ahead, and the success launch of the Ares I-X test flight in October 2009, the momentum is building within HAL5 to make 2011 ISDC a great success. We aimed to repeat the success that we forged when HAL5 last hosted the 1993 ISDC. Despite some hiccups outside our control (Cancellation of the NASA Constellation Program, and the April 27, 2011 tornados outbreak in Alabama), we managed to pull together a great conference.

We didn't slowed down after the conference. We continued with our outstanding monthly free public lectures, education outreach events, and with Project HALO. In 2014, we were approached by the Arts Council (now Arts Huntsville) through a recommendation of a good friend (Thank you Gina and Carrie!) to participate in the annual Panoply Arts Festival's STEAM Interactive activities. You may be wondering...space group in arts festival? Well. it was a match made in heaven. The event allowed us to reach out to a lot more kids. We infused some STEM ideas with a touch of ARTS into arts and craft plus game plays. Showing the kids how the gadget or take home item that they are making have some fun physics, chemistry and/or mathematics behind them. ... more...

The Future

In the years ahead, HAL5 will continue to support local STEAM activities, cooperations with local technical societies and organizations to educate and foster the next generation. At the same time, our Project HALO will continue to find its place to pursuit technology development and launch a few rockets here and there. Will we honor the founding parent organization (the L5 Society)'s unwritten bylaw that the society will disband after its first meeting at a space station in the Earth-Moon L5 point? Only time will tell...
